The instructional focus for January 6, 2009 through February 8, 2009 is Classifying and Categorizing.

CLASSIFYING AND CATEGORIZING: Classifying and categorizing is the act of grouping items into definable categories on the basis of their attributes.

There is a defined process that will be utilized:

  1. Identify the items to classify
  2. Select item and its attributes (what is important) and Identify others like it.
  3. State the rule for that category.
  4. Select another item and its attributes (what is important) and identify others like it.
  5. State the rule for that category.
  6. Repeat the previous two steps until all items are classified and each category has a rule that defines or describes it.

QUESTIONS TO ASK:

  1. What do I want to put together?
  2. How can I put the items into groups(categories) that are alike?
  3. What is the same about things in each group (rules for the category)?
  4. Is there anything that does not belong? Do I need to make another group?
